Balikbayan Box

A balikbayan box is a large box used by Filipinos overseas to send packages of goods or personal items to their families and friends in the Philippines. The word “Balikbayan” itself means “returning to one’s homeland” in Tagalog, the national language of the Philippines.

Typically, people use Balikbayan boxes to send items that are difficult or expensive to obtain in the Philippines, such as clothing, electronics, and household goods. We pack the boxes with care and fill them to the brim with items, including pasalubong for relatives and friends.

The tradition of sending balikbayan boxes originated in the 1980s, when overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) started using them to send goods to their families back home. Today, balikbayan boxes continue to be an important part of Filipino culture and a way for OFWs to stay connected to their loved ones in the Philippines.
